California Limits Bottom Trawling

December 2004

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation that puts all state bottom-trawl fisheries under the management of the state Fish & Game Commission. Senator Dede Alpert (D-San Diego) sponsored the law, which goes into effect January 1 and establishes a permitting system for bottom-trawl fisheries and restricts areas where bottom trawling is allowed in state waters. Sport fishing and environmental organizations such as United Anglers of Southern California and Oceana supported the bill throughout the legislative process.
