Q I use a long, two-handed Spey rod with a shooting basket, and I get long-distance casts with it. After you fight a fish and have it alongside the boat, though, how do you land the fish without going ashore? The rod is almost as long as the boat.
Fortunately, the answer is simple. When your companion is ready to take the fish, step behind him or her and turn your rod hand opposite the fish so that the rod is pointing away from the fish. This allows you to draw the fish right to your feet.
