Alive and Well

|| |—| || |Illustration: Ed Luterio| Live shrimp pinned on a jig can be a deadly bait for permit and seatrout. But when I went fishing in Florida last winter my shrimp did not last long and I figured it was because they had all piled on top of one another in one corner of my live well. I solved the problem by dropping a square piece of galvanized mesh wire into the well. The mesh gives the shrimp something to grab onto, allowing them to spread out. It also provides an easier way to retrieve bait: just grab the mesh and pick off a shrimp.
