Anglers in two Southern California tournaments raised nearly $53,000 in donations to support Red Cross relief efforts in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The crews of the 160 boats fishing in the Zane Grey-Cabo Yachts Invitational and the Drambuie Catalina Classic marlin tournaments made pledges by marine radio in response to challenges by tournament officials. They also made impromptu donations at tournament events. Following a donation "challenge" issued at the Zane Grey-Cabo Yachts Invitational banquet, several teams immediately came forward and donated $2,000 apiece. During the Drambuie Catalina Classic banquet, an enthusiastic group of more than 35 teams quickly swamped fund volunteers with thousands of dollars in cash contributions. Cabo Yachts spokesman Greg Bourque was gratified by the concern and generosity shown by anglers in both tournaments. "We were proud to be a sponsor of an event that produced such an outpouring of compassion and national pride," said Bourque. "These guys really opened their hearts."
