Reader Tips: Thread the Needle

Use a stiff wire to push your line through your swivel, hook eye or lure.

My vision is not what it used to be, and some fishing knots have become a challenge to tie, especially the Double Palomar knot with light braided line at night. A simple but effective solution I’ve found is to fold a small piece of leader wire in half with a pair of pliers. Trim the ends so they are the same length, and slide your braided line between the two legs until it jams in the fold. Now you can use the stiff wire to push the line through your swivel, hook eye or lure before finishing the knot. This technique comes in handy even for those with 20/20 vision.
