You can use a piece of wooden dowel or an old wooden rake handle as an extension handle to make nets sturdier and buoyant. Remove the end cap or cut off a longer net handle, and slide a section of the dowel into the section of hollow metal handle. Push the dowel into the existing handle enough so it offers firm support for the net, then secure it with two stainless screws through the metal handle and into the wooden dowel at the end closest to the net and at the butt end. This eliminates the concern of losing nets dropped overboard, as now they’ll float.
