Reader Tips: Non-Slip

Make sure that the band is well stretched so that it grabs the spool tightly...

Braided line definitely has its advantages, but it can take a little while to get used to. One tendency of braid is to slip on the reel spool. There are several ways to combat this problem, but I came up with one that is completely foolproof. I found that the width of the elastic bands used to hold bunches of produce (such as broccoli) together were roughly the same width as one of my spinning spools. I stretched one of these bands over my spool, and sure enough, it fit perfectly. I tied the braided line around the spool arbor with a hangman's knot, and I haven't experienced any slippage since. If you have a larger spool, double the bands, or if you need to, you can trim a band until you have a perfect fit. Make sure that the band is well stretched so that it grabs the spool tightly.
