Reader Tips: Keeping Points Sharp

This method is the perfect way to store lures away at the end of the season

Many fishermen find themselves carrying around lures with hooks that are rusted and no longer reliable. Here’s a suggestion for keeping hooks sharp and new-looking. Buy some plastic or rubber 14-inch diameter tubing at a hardware or medical supply store. Cut lengths of tubing about a half-inch longer than the hook’s point. Fill the tube with cotton, squirt in a bit of oil and slide the hook into the tubing, burying it in the oil-soaked cotton. Each time you use the hook, it will be sharp and clean. This method is the perfect way to store lures away at the end of the season. The same procedure, with the proper-size tubing, works for gaffs and knives as well.
