Globalstar has unveiled Sat-Fi voice and data solution, a remarkable new communications system that integrates a WiFi enabled device such as a smartphone with Globalstar’s satellite constellation.
Sat-Fi works with existing smartphones and phone numbers to send and
receive communications over the company’s satellite network, offering seamless voice and data connectivity when beyond the range of cellular, such as when fishing offshore.
Through a convenient app and the Sat-Fi satellite hot-spot device, subscribers will be able to easily send and receive calls, email and SMS text messages anywhere within the constellation footprint. Sat-Fi is built and priced to appeal to a broad market, according to Globalstar, which has not released pricing of the service or hot-spot device.
The company believe that boating anglers who fish outside cellular range and who need to make calls, send emails and communicate via SMS text messages while on the water will find Sat-Fi particularly useful.

said Jay Monroe, chairman and CEO of Globalstar.
Sat-Fi service is expected to receive final FCC certification during the second quarter of 2014, with shipments starting shortly thereafter. The company will then market and sell the product.
