Free-lining a live shrimp while drifting over grass beds in five to ten feet of water is an all-around productive and popular tactic. In shallower areas, a shrimp fished beneath a float or "popping cork" works well. Pop the float as you would a popping plug to get the trout's attention. Once it homes in on the commotion, it will see the shrimp and usually strike. Many Gulf Coast anglers, particularly those in Texas, like to wade the shallows and cast plugs or jigs.
