Reels: Shimano Core 50 or equivalent casting reel.

Lines: 20- or 30-pound braided line.

Leaders: 25-pound fluorocarbon.

Lures: MirrOlure She Pup, Heddon Super Spook Jr., and Bass Assassin Chicken on a Chain 5-inch Saltwater Shad and 4-inch Sea Shad.

What: Speckled trout.

When: Year-round.

Where: Entire Texas coast.

Who: Trout fishing is tailor-made for do-it-yourself outings, but you’ve got to start somewhere, and even guides began their careers fishing with guides. Give yourself a head start by fishing with a pro. It’s money well spent.
