California regulations allow single or tandem barbless J or circle hooks with trolled baits or lures. Fishermen mooching for salmon (using dead baits suspended underneath a drifting or stationary vessel) must use barbless circle hooks. Once you have a salmon aboard your vessel, you must use the same type of hook for any fishing you do that day. For example, if you catch salmon in the morning and then fish for halibut or rockfish later in the day, you must use barbless circle hooks for baitfishing and barbless J hooks on your lures all day.
