On the flats, redfish can be stalked or hunted in the manner used for bonefish. Reds come up onto the flats as the tide increases, arriving in the shallows, sometimes with the rays. They will feed in skinnier water until the tide changes, working back out to deeper water as the tide ebbs.

From North Carolina to northeastern Florida, reds will be found along both sides of barrier islands. Look for them at inlets and nearby sandbars. In the Gulf, its the same thing. Barrier islands extend from the Panhandle, along Alabama to Texas. These are key spots to find schooling red drum.

When searching for redfish, either by wading or from a flats boat, put the sun to your back. This avoids glare in your eyes, and makes sight hunting more enjoyable.
