Pacific Alliance Begins Work in Guatemala

The Pacific Alliance, a group funded by the Presidential Challenge of Central America and The Billfish Foundation, met in Guatemala City to begin its task of educating local governments to promote billfish conservation and sport fishing tourism. An outgrowth of the Second Sport Fishing Economic Conference held last year in Guatemala, the Pacific Alliance met to convince the Guatemalan legislature to keep existing sailfish-protection laws in place. Consisting of representatives from countries ranging from Mexico to Ecuador—as well as concerned delegates from the U.S.—the alliance fosters discussion about the value of living billfish to local economies in these countries.
