No More Jewfish

A national organization of fisheries scientists has changed the name of Florida’s largest grouper species from jewfish, which it deemed offensive, to goliath grouper. The Committee of Names of Fishes of the American Fisheries Society has been petitioned for decades by people who felt the name was offensive to Jews, and the latest petition resulted in unanimous agreement on the change. The society has no record of the old name’s origin. The last name change took place in 1998, when the group changed the name of the pikeminnow from its old moniker, squawfish.
