United Anglers of Southern California names new president

Sportfishing landing/vessel owner Steven Fukuto assumes leadership of non-profit fishing group

United Anglers of Southern California (UASC) announced today it has chosen Steven Fukuto to serve as its new president.  Fukuto, an owner/partner in Long Beach Sportfishing and the 85-foot commercial passenger fishing vessel Eldorado, will take the place of Tom Raftican, who resigned from this non-profit fishing/conservation organization in November 2008.

In addition to working in the sportfishing industry, Fukuto has a long track record working in the financial arena, providing financial and management advisory services through his firm Fukuto & Company since 1994.  He is a long-time member of UASC, has served on the organization’s Board of Directors and has held the post of UASC Treasurer since 2006.

I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead,” Fukuto commented during a recent interview.   “Implementation of the Marine Life Protection Act in Southern California is foremost in the minds of anglers, and we will continue to take a proactive role in this process.  We’ll also continue to focus on core issues like dealing with destructive commercial fishing gear, habitat enhancement and creating a new generation of anglers,” added Fukuto.

UASC is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2009, and lists among its many achievements removing gillnets from state waters, stopping destructive bottom trawls and spearheading an effort to release more than 1.5 million juvenile white seabass off the Southern California coast.
