Red Snapper Season to Re-Open in South Atlantic

NOAA Fisheries Announces Opening Dates

A fishery that has been closed for three years is set to re-open this month.
 
Following its June meeting, the South Atlantic Marine Fisheries Council (SAMFC) recommended to NOAA Fisheries that a limited reopening be announced on the east coast.

The recreational fishing opening will season will consist of two, consecutive 3-day weekends:

The first segment of the season opens at 12:01 a.m., on Friday, September 14, 2012, and closes at 12:01 a.m on Monday, September 17, 2012. The second three-dayseason opens at 12:01 a.m., Friday, September 21, 2012, and closes at 12:01a.m. on Monday, September 24, 2012.

During the open weekends the bag limit is one fish per person per day with no minimum size.
 
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and its research institute (FWRI) will be involved in data collection on the east coast of Florida during the open weekends. Anglers are urged to drop off red snapper carcasses at one of the following locations so the Institute may collect useful age and growth rates data to determine the health of the fishery.
