GA Record Tarpon
On September 4, angler Jeff Pierce of Atlanta, fishing with Captain Greg Hildreth out of St. Simons Island, Georgia, landed what could have been the new Georgia state record tarpon – had they wanted to kill it.
After an hour-long battle, Pierce had the fish boatside. They measured the length and girth and from those measurements determined an estimated weight of 188 pounds, 27 pounds heavier than the existing state record.
Pierce was fishing with an Ugly Stick Custom 30-60 class rod and a Penn Squall reel loaded with 65-pound Spiderwire Invisi-Braid and a 14/0 Mustad circle hook.
