The quest for the elusive billfish is weeks away when the 2nd Palmas del Mar International Grand Slam Fishing Tournament kicks off April 23 through the 25th. It is to be held in one of the most promising recreational sport fishing grounds in the Caribbean: the passage between South Vieques and the South East coast of Puerto Rico, headquarter in the resort of Palmas del Mar, Humacao.
The only Grand Slam event in the region, the 2nd Palmas del Mar International Grand Slam Fishing Tournament will grant a $50,000 purse to the boat that catches & releases three different billfish species in one day. It could either be: sailfish, swordfish, spearfish, white or blue marlin to qualify. Awards will also be granted for billfish, tuna, dolphin, and wahoo.
"Every catch counts," said Luis "Cuquito" Muñiz, Chairman.
Fishing area spans from the "Horseshoe," South of St. Thomas and East of Vieques, passing the "Wall" and the deep trench South of Vieques up to the "Patilla Banks" in the South, with exciting sea mounds that provides great deep sea fishing grounds.
The Tournament will be celebrated in the new Yacht Club Marina with 162 slips and state of the arts facilities for mega yachts of up to 200 feet long and located within the luxury resort community of Palmas del Mar, Humacao, Puerto Rico. (Actually, the Marina is located close to the Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rain forest in the US National Forest system.)
The first edition was celebrated last year and drew 30 boats. The "Aguja" boat released two billfish, nearly netting the "Grand Slam" prize of $50,000.00. Last year event also set a national record for Puerto Rico with a 522 pound swordfish caught by angler Rafi Casanova on board the Four C'Sons.
