On Wednesday, April 25, boats fishing out of Bud-N-Mary’s Marina shattered existing single-day sailfish release records as classic “tailing” conditions on the reef brought the sails to the surface by the dozens. Capt. Scott Stanczyk and the crew of the Catch 22 set the new record with an incredible 47 releases, while his nephew Nick Stanczyk tallied 18 sails for the day on the B&M. Capt. George McElveen on the Reel McCoy added another 22 releases.

Tailing conditions occur infrequently in the spring when strong winds oppose the current, creating powder-blue water and rough conditions that cause the sails to surf the waves down-sea into the current.

The old record of 24 sailfish released in a day was held by another Bud-N-Mary’s charter boat, the Relentless, skippered by Capt. Paul Ross, who was fishing with the late Richard Lewis of New York City.
