Beginning 1 Jan. 2009, a two-fish per day recreational bag limit will be in effect for gag grouper in the Gulf of Mexico EEZ. The aggregate bag limit for other groupers will remain at five fish.
There will also be a closed season on gags from 1 Feb. to 31 March. The seasonal closure on red and black groupers will remain between 15 Feb. and 15 March. These regulations will terminate 1 June in lieu of permanent regulations or need for an extended period of interim rules.
