Mod Squad wins Cape May ASA Tournament

The tournament was held at South Jersey Marina in Cape May on May 5

The Mercury/ASA Striper Tournament Series, sponsored by Fountain Power Boats, kicked off the Spring Striper Season at South Jersey Marina in Cape May on May 5 under the new format that reduces the contests from one bass each of two days to two bass in one day.  Striped bass fishing had been very slow in the Delaware Bay area, but 46 boats still entered. Yet, only eight were able to bring in a single bass for the weigh-in. Local angler Matt Unsworth won on a Contender 28 with his Team Mod Squad by weighing bass of 27.65 and 15.40 pounds for a total of 43.05 pounds that paid off $5590. They also took the Junior category of the tournament with honors being shared by Junior team members Ann Unsworth, Sydney Unsworth and Connor Rowe. Jim McIlhinny of Team Just Released, fishing a 33 Contender, was second with a 41.50 total for a $2684 payout. Karl Bauz of Team Pirasea, fishing a 38 Fountain, brought in the largest bass by far at 38.6 pounds to take third with that single fish worth a total of $3306. The next ASA Tournament will be contested May 17 at Bahrs Landing in Highlands New Jersey. For information go to FISHASA.com.
