Louisianans regain popular surf fishing venue

Elmer's Island is now open

For the first time in nearly a decade sportsmen in Louisiana can access Elmer’s Island, which reopened to the public for the 4th of July weekend.  More than 800 visitors took advantage of the new opportunity.

Historically a popular and productive surf fishing spot, the 230-acre island just west of Grand Isle, officially called known as Goat Island and referred to as Elmer’s Island since the 1970s, is well known for speckled and white trout, flounder, redfish, channel mullet, black drum, croaker, Spanish mackerel and many other species.

The island was closed over  law suits over and ownership, and subsequently tied up in legal issues. Following a recent court ruling in favor of the state, the island has reopened to the public and vehicle access to the beach will be allowed during weekends from Friday through Sunday daily between 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. A valid fishing license or “Wild Louisiana Stamp” is required.

“The appreciation has been overwhelming for reopening this state treasure for the holiday weekend,” said LDWF Secretary Robert Barham.  “Families, friends, the old and the young were able to gather for picnics, fishing and various other outdoor activities.”
