Halibut Closes in Washington, Marine Area 2

Recreational quota projected to be met this weekend

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced that fishing for Pacific halibut will be prohibited beginning May 21, 2012 in most of Marine Area 2 (Westport to Ocean Shores). Halibut fishing will still be is allowed in the northern nearshore area from the Queets River south to Point Chehalis and east of a line approximating the 30 fathom depth until further notice.

The closure follows the determination that recreational fishermen will have the Pacific halibut quota set aside for the primary season by the end of the day May 20, 2012. A separate quota set aside is sufficient to continue to allow halibut fishing seven days per week in the northern nearshore area.
