Giant Cod Landed Off Scotland

The 6-foot fish weighed more than 65 pounds.

Atlantic cod catches don’t get talked about much, unless the discussion is overfishing. The tasty, meaty fish is known more for its eating quality than its gamefish attributes. But what if it’s the largest cod ever caught in British waters? James Isbister, 38, landed a record common ling (Molva molva) measuring six feet and 67 pounds on February 24, 2013. The fish was caught in the afternoon off the coast of Muckle Flugga, located on the Shetland Islands of Scotland. It took Isbister almost half an hour to land the fish and now sits folded in his mother’s freezer, reports the Scotsman newspaper. The fish will undergo scrutiny from the British Record Fish Committee to establish whether it’s a new record. Isbister plans to give the fish carcass to the Natural History Museum in London, says the BBC.
