Fishing Fans to Cast Votes for Best 'Fish Tale' May 18 in Islamorada

Familiar fishing figures including Tim Klein, Richard Stanczyk and Bill Knowles are to share their tallest tales

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys —– Well-known Florida Keys anglers, guides and fishing pioneers are to cast their storytelling lines as they vie to tell the greatest true fish tale at the Islamorada Fish Tales event Friday, May 18, at the Islamorada Fishing Club.

Familiar fishing figures including Tim Klein, Richard Stanczyk and Bill Knowles are to share their tallest tales, from square grouper to black grouper, with a rapt audience of angling enthusiasts who can cast votes for the most believable and best account.

Storytelling is to be audio recorded and the best stories are to be re-broadcast on WLRN, Miami Public Radio, as well as streamed on the WLRN website.

The event is a fundraiser for the Islamorada Community Entertainment (ICE) high school scholarship fund and an opportunity to preserve a portion of angling’s significant oral history in the Florida Keys.

The event begins with appetizers at 6:30 p.m. followed by a full-course dinner. Fish tales begin at 8 p.m. and attendees can cast their votes starting at 9 p.m.

The Islamorada Fishing Club is located at 104 Madeira Road.

Tickets are $60 per person and can be purchased in advance at Capital Bank locations in Islamorada and Tavernier. After May 15, tickets are $80. Ticket prices include a full dinner and one vote. Additional votes can be purchased for $10 each.

Seating is very limited so early ticket purchase is recommended.
