Louisiana Grocery Stores Busted for Selling Marlin

Agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries (LDWF) found marlin meat for sale in 25 Louisiana supermarkets run by the Idaho-based Albertson’s Corporation. An agent from the LDWF’s Special Investigations Unit visited the Lafayette store after receiving a complaint. More than 365 pounds of blue marlin had been distributed to the Louisiana supermarkets through the company’s Katy, Texas, warehouse. Twelve of the stores had no records identifying the source of the fish. A highly regulated, state-protected game fish, blue marlin cannot be imported or sold in Louisiana. Albertson’s was charged with 35 counts of selling blue marlin, eight counts of violating interstate commerce regulations and 12 counts of failure to maintain records.
