A fleet of 46 international teams raced off to the famed Los Cabos fishing grounds and found striped marlin heaven during the first day of action in the 13th annual IGFA Offshore World Championship. In all, anglers had released an impressive 136 striped marlin by the time the “lines in” call was made at the end of Day One.

The bite was on all day long with many teams scoring multiple releases and seeing plenty of tailers, free jumpers and multiple fish in the trolled spread. The team from Mexico representing the 2010 IGFA Offshore World Champions raised 22 striped marlin, while catching and releasing 11 to take the lead with 2200 points. Five of their fish were caught by Aruro Monetlongo, who leads in the Angler division. In second place, the U.S. and Mexican team representing the San Carlos Cup released seven striped marlin, earning 1400 points. Following in third place with seven striped marlin releases is the U.S.-based team representing the 39th Annual Bluewater Tournament in Florida.

All fish are caught using 30-pound class IGFA Momoi line, and teams are required to use non-offset circle hooks for all natural live or dead bait fishing. Each team starts the day with dead bait but is allowed to catch live bait during fishing hours. Most fish today were caught on dead ballyhoo with only a few teams electing to make bait.

Following the fishing, anglers enjoyed complimentary beer from the Baja Brewing Company on the docks while they checked-in their release videos and tackle. Back at the Finisterra hotel, a wonderful IGFA party was hosted by COO Mike Myatt and sponsored by our good friends at Momoi Hi-Liner and Costa Sunglasses. The drinks flowed the food was great with a good time had by all on this very exciting fist day of fishing in the 2012 IGFA Offshore World Championship in Cabo San Lucas Mexico.
