Escaping the cold winter of her Bozeman, Mont., USA, home, multi-record holder Dotty Ballantyne, guided by famed Key West, Fla., Captain R.T. Trosset, landed a jack crevalle (Caranx hippos) on January 31, weighing 1.39 kg (3 lb 1 oz). She took 50 minutes to capture the fish on ultra thin 1 kg (2 lb) tippet while fishing Key West. The current IGFA women’s 2 lb tippet record is 1 lb, 12 oz (.79 kg) that Dotty herself set back in July 2006 in Apalachicola, Fla.

On the saltwater fly fishing side Jeff Storm Harkavy, of Coral Springs, Fla., USA, landed a Pacific barracuda, (Sphyraena argentea) on Dec. 26, while fishing Golfito, Costa Rica. The fish weighed 3.18 kg (7 lb 0 oz) and was caught with 3 kg (6 lb) tippet. The current men’s IGFA record for 3 kg tippet is 2 lb 12 oz off Mexico’s Santos Island near Todos last April. Jeff landed the fish in eight minutes guided by Bobby McGuinness.

While fishing Western Australia’s Rottnest Island on Dec. 28, Rhyss Whittred, of Landsdale, W.A., used a jig to attract a samsonfish (Seriola hippos) weighing 29.75 kg (65 lb 9 oz) on 8 kg (16 lb) class line. The current IGFA men’s line class record is 54 lb 13 oz ( 24.88 kg) caught near Port Lincoln, South Australia this past June. He was guided by Mary Jarrett and took 35 minutes to bring the fish to the boat.

On Sept. 17, Richard C. Keatley, of Norfolk, Va., USA, landed a striped bass (Morone saxatilis) weighing in at 23.27kg (51 lb 5 oz). He used a clouser minnow fly tied to 10 kg (20 lb), tippet while fishing Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The current IGFA men’s tippet record is 43 lb 12 oz ( 19.84kg) caught Dec., 2006, from the same area. It took Keatley 30 minutes to land.

Fishing off Key West, Florida, USA, Ronald P. Glinski M.D., of Whiteville, N.C., USA, guided by Capt. Ralph Delph, landed a black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci) on Dec. 30, weighing 8.16kg (18 lb 0 oz). He used live herring for bait on 10 kg (20 lb) class line and took one hour to wrestle the fish to the boat. The current IGFA men’s line class record is 2 lb 8 oz (1.13 kg) caught two years ago near Marathon Key also in the Florida Keys.

A 33 year old record may be broken by Samatha Vale, of Port Vila, Vanuatu, who when guided by Herve Picarda, landed a dogtooth tuna, (Gymnosarda unicolor) on February 5. She fought the fish for 25 minutes while fishing off Vanuatu’s Shepherd Island, using 10 kg (20 lb) class line, baited with ballyhoo.The fish weighed in at 44 kg (97 lb 0 oz). The current IGFA women’s line class record is 66 lb 0 oz (29.93 kg) recorded from the Denis Island in the Seychelles, April 1977.

Fly fishing Golfito, Costa Rica Feb. 8, IGFA Lifetime Achievement Award winning angler Martin Arostegui, Coral Gables, FL, USA, landed a Pacific barracuda (Sphyraena argentea) on 1 kg (2 lb) tippet, weighing .57 kg (1 lb 4 oz). He hand-tied and used his own creation an Arostegui Small Pilchard Fly to attract the fish. If approved Arostegui will be the first to achieve that tippet record for the Pacific barracuda which was added as a new species April 2009. Arostegui now has now over 300 IGFA fishing records.

While fly fishing Islas Secas, Panama on March 9, multi-record holder Dotty Ballantyne, of Bozeman, Mont., USA, landed a bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) weighing 1.47 kg (3 lb 4 oz) on 4 kg (8 lb) tippet. She was guided by Carter Andrews, and used a baitfish fly to catch her quarry. If approved for the currently vacant record she would add another to her impressive collection of now 78 IGFA world records.

Fishing Minamiboso, Japan, Muneaki Hayashi of Chiba, Japan, and using 15 kg (30 lb) class line, landed a blackfin seabass (Lateolabrax latus) on Feb. 26, weighing 8.8 kg (19 lb 6 oz). The current IGFA men’ line class record is 19 lb 2 oz ( 8.7 kg) caught from Shirahama, Chiba, Japan two years ago.

Using a clouser pattern while fly fishing Puerto Lopez Mateos, Mexico, on Feb. 20, Lance Erik Peterson, Port Angeles, Wash., USA, landed a broomtail grouper (Mycteroperca xenarcha) weighing 2.27 kg (5 lb 0 oz) on 10 kg (20 lb) tippet. The men’s tippet record for the recently added species to the IGFA World Record Game Fishes Book is currently vacant.

While fishing Golfito, Costa Rica, young smallfry angler Jackson Seamans, of Debary, Fla., USA, guided by Capt. Bobby McGuinness, landed a Pacific jack crevalle (Caranx caninus) on Feb. 13, weighing 10.48 kg (23 lb 1 oz) after successfully wrestling it to the boat in 20 minutes. The current boy’s IGFA smallfry record is 18 lb 8 oz ( 8.39 kg) caught in 1997 at Pinas Bay, Panama.

On January 3, Auckland, New Zealand angler Scott Tindale, landed a snoek (Thyrsites atun) a fish popular in the Southern Hemisphere, weighing 5.14kg (11 lb 5 oz) while fishing off Tutukaka, N.Z. He used a skipjack for bait that incited a 10 minute fight for the potential IGFA All-Tackle record. The current IGFA mark is 9 lb 14 oz (4.48 kg) pulled from Hout Bay, in South Africa, two years ago.

Tim Hammond, of Morningside Durban, South Africa, found a fight while trying to land a talang queenfish, (Scomberoides commersonianus) on February 2. Guided by Tim Christy, while fishing Hell’s Gate, Mozambique, it took Hammond an hour to land the fish which weighed 14 kg (30 lb 13 oz). He caught the fish using a jerk minnow on 15 kg (30 lb) line. The current IGFA men record for the species is 23 lb 11oz (10.75 kg) caught in 1991 near Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Rick Thomas, of Palmetto Bay, Fla, USA, landed a cobia (Rachycentron canadum) on April 16, weighing 54.94 kg (121 lb 2 oz) on 37 kg (80 lb) class line in five minutes using pinfish for bait. The current men’s IGFA line class record is 116 lb 8 oz (52.84 kg) caught in 2006 at Oregon Inlet, N.C. USA.

Young smallfry angler Joshua D. Anyzeski, of Jupiter, Fla, USA, landed a tripletail (Lobotes surinamensis) on March 23, weighing 10.21 kg (22 lb 8 oz). It took the youngster eight minutes using a sardine minnow. The current IGFA junior boy’s smallfry record is 21 lb 0 oz (9.52 kg) taken from Charlotte Harbor, Fla., USA in 2006.

Fishing New Zealand’s Ranfurny Bank, Terence Price of Porirua, N.Z., landed a wreckfish (Polyprion americanus) on March 2, weighing 86.2 kg (190 lb 0 oz), in 25 minutes. He was using squid for the catch which qualifies as a potential All-Tackle record. The current IGFA record is 180 lb 5 oz (81.8 kg) caught in 2003 also on N.Z.’s Ranfurly Bank.

From Western Australia, Rhys Clatworthy landed a golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus) on March 26 while fishing out of his home town of Exmouth. This potential men’s IGFA 3 kg (6 lb) line class record, which is currently vacant, took one hour to land and weighed in at 11.3 kg (24 lb 14 oz).

Using very light line and lots of finesse while fishing in the Florida Keys, USA, Charlotte A. Sampson of Ocean City, Maryland, USA, landed a lemon shark (Carcharhinidae family) a member of the whaler shark family. She made the catch on April 10 while fishing Summerland Key. Her potential women’s 1 kg (2 lb) line class record weighed in at 31.75 kg (51 lb 0 oz). The shark hit a piece of false albacore and took 40 minutes to land. After documenting and photographing she released the fish alive. The current IGFA record is 11.11 kg (24 lb 8 oz) recorded in May 2007 from the Content Keys.

Using very thin tippet while fly fishing near Nelson, Australia, a border town located at the mouth of the Glenelg River in the south western corner of the state of Victoria, fly caster Frank Bluch of Corio, Victoria, landed a 2.15 kg (4 lb 12 oz) meagre (Argyrosomus spp.) on April 25. Bluch was using a yellow rabbit streamer tied to 1 kg (2 lb) tippet to catch a potential men’s saltwater flyfishing record. The current IGFA record is vacant for the recently added species.

Lance Erik Peterson of Port Angeles, Washington, USA, may break a 12-year old IGFA fly rod record after landing a 22 kg (48 lb 8 oz) roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis) on May 16 while fishing from the shore of Cabo del Este, Mexico. His fish put up a 45 minute fight after hitting Peterson’s Mona-Lisa fly, and qualifies for the men’s 6 kg (12 lb) tippet world record. The current IGFA tippet record is 41 lb 8 oz (18.82 kg) taken from the waters off Morro Del Potosi in Zihuatanejo, Mexico in April 1998.

A new record species might be added to the IGFA record books after avid world traveling angler Steven M. Wozniak of San Ramon, Calif., USA, landed a sicklefish (Drepane punctuata) on April 18 while fishing Ponggol Marina, Singapore. The potential IGFA All-Tackle record was caught on a peeled prawn and weighed in at .68 kg (1 lb 8 oz).

Thomas M. Evans Jr. of Grafton, Vermont, USA, guided by Al Dopirak, landed a huge tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) on May 10 while fishing a brown toad fly off Pine Island, Florida, USA near Ft. Myers. This potential men’s 6 kg (12 lb) tippet record took two hours and ten minutes to land and weighed in at 88.22 kg (194 lb 8 oz). The current IGFA record is 177 lbs (80.28 kg) recorded off Homosassa, Florida in May, 1994.

Another fisherman, junior angler Maximilian Hampl of Cartago, Costa Rica may also have broken his own IGFA fishing record. Guided by Edgar Montero, Hampl landed a monster sized almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana) on June 15 while fishing the Golfo de Papagayo, Costa Rica to qualify for the potential male-junior record which may beat his old record caught last year in the same waters. Hampl’s catch weighed in at 34.97 kg (77 lb 1.6 oz) and took him 20 minutes to land after the fish hit his live moonfish. His current IGFA record is 27 kg (59 lb 8 oz).

Multi IGFA record holder Roberta G. Arostegui of Coral Gables, Florida, USA, guided by legendary IGFA Certified Captain Bouncer Smith, may have recaptured an old IGFA record by landing a 1.25 kg (2 lb 12 oz) gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) on May 30, while fishing Bimini, Bahamas to qualify for the women’s 2 kg (4 lb) line class record . The fish fought for three minutes after hitting a live pilchard. The current IGFA record is 1.13 kg (2 lb 8 oz). Mrs. Arostegui had previously held the record with a 1.02 kg (2 lb 4 oz) gray snapper caught in the same Bimini waters in June 2008.

Japanese angler Masamitsu Okayama of Iwanai-Gun, Hokkaido, landed a kitsune-mebaru (Sebastes vulpes) on May 22, while fishing Shiribetsu, Japan. This potential all-tackle record fish which weighed in at 2.8 kg (6 lb 2 oz) was landed in four minutes after it hit Okayama’s soft plastic bait. The current IGFA record is 2.7 kg (5 lb 15 oz) caught in May 2006 in nearby Setana Hokkaido, Japan.

A dead flying fish was the bait New Zealand angler Rikki Williams of Mt. Albert in Auckland used to catch a 50.6 kg (111 lb 8 oz) southern yellowtail (Seriola lalandi), on March 13 while fishing Ranfurly Banks, Australia. This potential men’s 37 kg (80 lb) line class record took Williams 15 minutes to bring in and may beat a 48-year old IGFA record. The current IGFA record is 48.98 kg (108 lb 0 oz) caught off Cape Brett, NZ in January 1962.

Massachusetts angler John M. Cole of West Newbury, guided by R. Andrew Cummings, landed a striped bass (Morone saxatilis) on June 17 while fishing off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. The potential men’s 2 kg (4 lb) tippet record weighed 10.43 kg (23 lb 0 oz) and took Cole 15 minutes to land after the fish hit his Chuleta Blanca fly. The current men’s IGFA tippet record is 8.84 kg (19 lb 8 oz) caught off Misquamicit Beach, Rhode Island, USA in August 1997.

Finally we have three records of interest of anglers beating their former IGFA records. Lady angler Toquaiah Jackson Carter of Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania, USA may eclipse a women’s fly record she’s held since June 2007. Guided by Joey Dawson, Ms. Carter landed a yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) on June 18, while fishing Argus Bank, Bermuda. Her impressive catch qualifies for the potential women’s 10 kg (20 lb) tippet record after weighing in at 24.86 kg (54 lb 13 oz). Carter needed an hour to land her trophy after it took her custom “bad hair day” fly. The current IGFA record is 24.38 kg (53 lb 12 oz), and has been held by Carter for the past three years.

Guided by her uncle while fishing out of Key West, Fla., USA, on June 3, smallfry angler Brielle Bennett of Cinnaminson, N.J., USA, landed an African pompano (Alectis ciliaris) weighing 5.7 kg (12 lb 9 oz) to qualify for the female-smallfry record. The uncle Brian Bennett said Brielle needed eight minutes to land her potential record catch after the fish hit her live pinfish. The current IGFA record in the junior division is vacant.

Miami, Fla., USA angler Xavier Casal guided by Rafael Moran, landed the potential men’s 37 kg (80 lb) line class record for broomtail grouper (Mycteroperca xenarcha) on June 6, while fishing Isla Santa Clara, Ecuador. Casal’s grouper weighed 23.13 kg (51 lb 0 oz) and took 18 minutes to land after the fish hit Casal’s Rapala X-Rap 30 lure. The current IGFA record is vacant.

Hilton Head, S.C. USA Captain Brian Vaughn of Hilton Head Island, SC, USA was guiding clients off his home town on July 9 when he took some time to cast a fly and landed a sizeable tripletail (Lobotes surinamensis) to qualify for the men’s 10 kg (20 lb) tippet record. Vaughn’s fish weighed 7.6 kg (16 lb 8 oz), and was landed in six minutes on a Lefty’s Deceiver fly. The current IGFA record is 7.42 kg (16 lb 6 oz) is 15 years old and was recorded in Barra del Colorado, Costa Rica.

P.C. Ouwendijk of Ouderkerk Aan Den Ijssel, Netherlands, guided by Les Lozowski, was fishing Hollands Diep, Netherlands on June 6 when a 6.54 kg (14 lb 6 oz) zander (Sander lucioperca) hit his lure. This potential IGFA 15 kg (30 lb) line class record was caught using a Culprit Shad on a jig head. The current IGFA record is vacant.
