Hardcore Handheld
Submersible and equipped with a safety strobe, the rugged HX600S VHF ($200) from Standard Horizon puts DSC distress calling in the palm of your hand. Simply hook the charger cradle to a compatible GPS. The VHF remembers the lat-lon when it was last in the cradle. It then transmits that position with your preset distress message at the push of a button. Equipped with programmable scan and multiple watch modes, the HX600S is a great backup radio that provides full access to marine and weather bands as well as AM and FM. Deep Six
The Cannonlink ($200) from Humminbird lets you punch a button to set the depths of up to six lead-swinging downriggers from the fishfinder, and shows their positions right on the display. Use the automatic control settings to keep baits at preset depths above the bottom or cycle them up and down between two depths. You’ll need a Humminbird fishfinder system to use it—if you have one you may just need a software upgrade. Reaching the fish down low will send your catch rates sky high. Fish Tunes
You wouldn’t mount a fishfinder in your car dashboard, so don’t put a car stereo in your boat. The SeaWorthy SEA MBB126 Marine Audio System ($140) has a black-box design to stow the precious, fragile guts of the sound system far from circuit-shorting salt spray. A waterproof faceplate keeps the tunes within reach and can be mounted almost anywhere—it’s only 1 1/8 inches deep. The system is compatible with MP3 players and laptops—other stuff best kept out of the elements. ProSpec Electronics; (800) 394-1914; www.prospecelectronics.com
