Coaming Cushion

While vinyl coaming material is pretty, it does not hold up well to the hooks, pliers and gaffs that are used on fishing boats. Ultraviolet light and salt spray also cause premature wear on some coaming pads. I have found that canvas-covered dock guard makes a fine alternative. It is sold in various lengths in most marine-supply stores, is virtually indestructible and weather resistant. I simply drilled pilot holes to line up with the grommets already installed on the dock guard, and attached it with screws. I have used it for five seasons and the cover, which resembles the fabric of a fire hose, does not have a mark on it.
