Catches of Note

Potential World-Record Mako Caught off Massachusetts

Chris Peters, a charter captain in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, on Martha’s Vineyard, caught a 1,221-pound mako from his 24-foot World Cat, Dazed and Confused. The shark hit a butterflied bonito at a depth of 15 feet while mate Doug Abdelnour was setting out lines about 20 miles east of Chatham. Angler Luke Sweeney fought the fish on 80-pound stand-up gear for about three hours, during which the shark straightened a flying gaff. If approved by the IGFA, the catch will best the old record by 107 pounds.
