Bimini tuna

John Brownlee

I just returned from a great trip to the island of Bimini in the Bahamas, where I met a group of writers from other magazines and websites on a press junket set up by the folks at Pure Fishing. We were there specifically at the invitation of Penn Reels to test some brand-new reels and their new monofilament fishing line, all to be released in the near future.

We had six boats and over the course of the past week, we caught everything from yellowtail snapper to yellowfin tuna, and as usual, the Bahamian people were wonderful! They treated us like honored guests and we all had a blast.

The highlight of the trip for me was being in the cockpit when Hunter Cole, Penn’s Senior Marketing Manager, caught his very first yellowfin tuna. Cole had already hooked three nice yellowfins during the trip, but all three got eaten by sharks before he could land them. The fourth time proved to be the charm for Cole, and he finally boated a fish of about 45 pounds to the cheers of the crew (see photo).

I also got a chance to fish with Patrick Sebile again. Sebile is the genius behind Sebile Lures, now also a part of Pure Fishing, and every time I fish with Patrick I learn something new. He has forgotten more about fishing with artificial lures than I will ever know and a day on the water with him is always great.

We filmed another episode of Sport Fishing Television (sportfishingtelevision.com) while we there and you’ll be able to see all of this on the Versus network sometime after the first of the year, so stay tuned…
