Salt Water Sportsman is proud to honor Chasten Whitfield as the 2013 Salt Water Kids Grand Prize winner. Chasten is a passionate angler and has been for as long as she can remember. Even when she’s not on the water, most of her days consist of fishing-related activities. At the youthful age of 13, she has already conducted fishing seminars, volunteered at children’s fishing events and become a published writer across several fishing media outlets. Her next goal is to host a fishing television show just for kids.
As enthusiastic as Chasten is about fishing, she is equally as driven to give and to help others. Her philanthropic endeavors started early in her life. When she was in kindergarten, Chasten set up a lemonade stand and raised $45. Instead of stashing her haul in a piggy bank, the money she earned went straight to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Currently, Chasten takes part in an annual fundraiser, and to date she has donated $8,000 to St. Jude. And this year Chasten helped a local fishing tournament raise $1,200 for the nonprofit organization, Face Autism.
SWS is proud of each and every monthly Salt Water Kids winner, but Chasten’s love for fishing and her selfless desire to help others really stands out — she is well deserving of the grand prize: a fishing trip with George Poveromo, TV show host of George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing and longtime SWS contributor. Once again, Chasten — congratulations from the staff of SWS, and a special thanks to Sperry Top-Sider for the support that made it all happen.
